From critique to design: “transformation” in the work of Gunther Kress
“TRANSFORMACIÓN” EN LA OBRA DE GUNTHER KRESS
Keywords:
Gunther Kress, Transformation, Critique, DesignAbstract
The notion of transformation was key in the work of Gunther Kress. In this paper I discuss three definitions of the term. While the first (social transformation) cuts across all his work, the other two (transformation as a linguistic/discursive operation and transformation as communication) refer to two particular frameworks: critique (Critical Linguistics, Critical Discourse Analysis) and design (Multimodal Social Semiotics), respectively. As shall be demonstrated throughout the paper, the conceptual trajectory of all three definitions of “transformation” is key to understanding Gunther Kress’ contribution to social sciences and the epistemological, political and ethical implications of his work.
