On the Centrality and Structure of the Chapter "The Docile Bodies" of Discipline and Punish

This paper explores the centrality of the first chapter of the third part of Discipline and Punish for the demonstration of its main argument as well as its structural tying in the concept of body. The central positional value of this chapter in the peculiar organization of the work can only be demonstrated by exposing the concept of discipline, its differentiation from other forms of domination (slavery, domesticity, vassality and asceticism) and the specification of thehistorical moment in which it emerges and the highlight of the
importance of this dating to Foucault's central argument.
