Abstract

This paper explores Schopenhauer’s and Nietzsche’s conceptions of music and their consequences for the philosophical reflexion of both philosophers about this art. It starts by identifying some contradictions of Schopenhauer’s ‘metaphysics of music’ andthen goes on to confront them with Nietzsche’s ideas about the philosophical importance of this art. In particular, the paper tries to show the way Nietzsche takes up and tries to solve the ambivalences of Schopenhauer’s analysis of rhythm and plasticity by means of his criticisms of Wagner’s reading of Schopenhauer’s metaphysics of music. Moreover, it clarifies the reasons why these same criticisms contribute for Nietzsche’s understanding of music as well as for his views on what philosophy should consist of.
