The aim of the analysis in this article is to establish as a formal element an aesthetic play of light and shadow, in relation to the choice of the narrative in focus ”“ elaborated by multiple points of view, as wellas the internal struggle of the warrior, an archetype in struggle with his shadow, in the process of psychological growth. As such, the historical novel Gates of Fire by Steven Pressfield is discussed, which is an arrative about the sacrifice of theThree hundred of Sparta and their allies against the invasion of Persia, in the Battle of Thermopylaein480BC.Theobjectiveis tofindtracesof theevolutionoftheSpartans,understoodinthis study as a manifestation of what post-Jungians, Robert Bly, Robert Moore and others call the archetype of the maturemale.One presents a Jungian interpretation based on traces of the unconscious in the narrative.
