This paper intends to address a part of my doctoral research, which focuses on the work of Georges Bataille precisely on the expressions of excess in restricted and general economies. Firstly, we will analyze the origin of the notion of expenditure and how it is located within Bataille's work, to later understand the different ways in which excess is managed in restricted economies. We seek to emphasize how the notion of expenditure is constructed from a critique of utilitarianism and how expenditure cannot be subsumed by the capitalist order of accumulation and productivity. We will show in the text how expenditure appears as disruptive, one of the machinery of excess that is dedicated to pure loss and gives way to the speculation of other ways of inhabiting the earth.
