Herbert Marcuse focused on the issue of ecology and the destruction of nature especially in his writings from the 70s. According to the Frankfurtian, the problem of the ecological crisis would be directly linked to his reading of subjectivity, which corresponds, in large part, to the script of Freudian metapsychology, mainly the theory of drives. Marcuse's hypothesis is that in modern society, especially in its advanced industrial form, there is a predominance in its members of a destructive character structure, that is, the forces of Thanatos would be overlapping the forces of Eros and being externalized, for example, in the process of destroying the environment. In this context, the Marcusian argument goes again towards the need for a politicization of erotic energy, which, therefore, would contribute to the care and protection of beings and living things. The ecological movement, in turn, revealing itself as a political and psychological movement, is seen as an indication of this politicization capable of provoking powerful existential revolts against established reality and of projecting a radical change in society.
