Antropologia contemporânea, sociedades complexas e outras questões

Que antropólogo poderia levar realmente a sério uma suposta "antropologia das sociedades primitivas" (ou "simples”, ou como se quiser denominá- las)? Sabe-se que as primeiras críticas ao emprego dessas categorias remontam ao final do século passado, com as obras de Boas e Durkheim, constituindo hoje um dos poucos aspectos quase consensuais da disciplina. Parece, contudo, que falar em sociedades "complexas" ou "modernas” não levanta tantos problemas, o que é evidentemente um contra-senso, se admitirmos a impossibilidade ou a inadequação do uso de termos como "simples" ou "primitivo". Essa ausência de problematização só pode derivar na verdade do fato de tendermos a esquecer como a própria noção de "sociedade primitiva" foi construída. Como demonstrou Adam Kuper num trabalho fascinante, a elaboração de uma imagem das sociedades ditas primitivas, bem como das "tradicionais", cumpriu a função política e intelectual de permitir o desenvolvimento de imagens da "sociedade moderna", "complexa", de nossa própria cultura enfim (Kuper 1988). A análise de Kuper permite igualmente uma melhor compreensão de alguns problemas mais específicos que parecem comprometer os estudos antropológicos das sociedades complexas. Se a noção de sociedade primitiva foi constituída, implícita ou inconscientemente, como projeção invertida da nossa, e se a função latente dessa projeção foi a de objetivar ou ratificar uma certa imagem de nós mesmos, isso significa que, para os primeiros antropólogos, a contribuição da antropologia para a análise das sociedades complexas deveria ser apenas parcial e indireta.
