Abstract

South America, and the Mercosur in particular, experienced in 2012 a time of redefinition of some of its political and strategic guidelines, when it was established a kind of “musical chairs” between some countries. On one hand, the suspension of Paraguay and the entry of Venezuela in the south-American Bloc challenged the durability of the project of regional integration. On the other hand, the political decision to preserve the democratic circumstances of the region is combined with the strategic decision to raise a resource-rich neighbor to the status of full member of Mercosur, which had triggered a renewed dynamic on the process of southamerican regional integration
