MISLEADING THE GROUP: AN INVESTIGATION OF THE CREDIBILITY OF ORAL NARRATIVES IN SOCIAL SETTINGS

Volunteers were recruited from each two groups to tell the
group three stories of their own choosing, and to do so in a purposely
misleading way. One group consisted of 13 individuals who were acquainted slightly; the other group consisted of 13 individuals who were
well-acquainted. All stories were audiotaped for later transcription.
Immediately after they heard each story, members of the audience wrote
their judgment as to whether the story was true or false, and the reasons
for their judgment. The contents of the stories, audience judgments and
reasons, and contextual variables were analyzed. Results appeared to be
related to audience members' pre-experimental perceptions of the
story-tellers. Plausibility of the story was the reason cited most often for
judging a story true or false. These results are discussed in relation to the
evolution of social bases for judgments of truth and falsehood from ancient
times to the present.
