Abstract

Perceptions of illness may differ with the individual's age
or the time the illness occurs. These differences in perception may also
account for the observed differences in the way the person copes with an
illness episode. It was investigated the perceptions about aging as a
cause of illness and symptoms and perceptions about the effect of age on
seriousness, preventability, curability and controllability of a series of
illness and symptoms. One hundred forty-eight community-dwelling adults
were interviewed for this study. The results showed respondents
expressing the belief that aging is associated with increased susceptibility
to disease and lowered potential for control or cure.
