ROLE OF GENDER AND ATTITUDES IN REGARD TO SEXUALITY
Abstract
Male and famale undergraduates and professionals of four
Brazilian cities answered Bem's Sex-Role Inventory (1974) and were
grouped according to their scores as masculine (59), feminine (170), androgynous
(74), and undifferentiated (97). They also answered Pasquali,
Souza and Tanizaki's Atittude Towards Sexuality Scale (1985). It was
predicted, according to Bem (1981), that high gender-typed subjects
(masculine and feminine) would have less tolerant attitudes towards debatable
issues in sexual behavior than low gender-typed ones (androgynous
and undifferentiated). Mann Whitney tests were used for the six
factors of the attitude scale. The prediction was confirmed for two factors,
that described extra-marital relationships and homosexuality as legitimate.
