PARTNERSHIP AND SEXUALITY IN CONTEMPORARY MARRIAGE AND REMARRIAGE
Abstract
The aim of this research is to evaluate the role of
sexuality versus partnership in contemporary marriage. Two
groups of married couples are distinguished: (1) couples who have
been married for the first time; and (2) couples who had been
previously married. Each group is composed of 10 couples which
are defined according to the following characteristics: middleclass,
living in Rio de Janeiro, age range between 25 and 45 years,
marriage lasting from 3 to 13 year, number of children from 1 to 4. A
semi-structured interview was made with each couple. The results
of these interviews indicate that there is an important difference in the role which is attached to sexuality versus partnership between
the couples of first marriage and those of subsequent marriages.
The main aspects of such difference are analysed. Such conclusions
have relevant implications for couple therapy in both cases.
