Abstract

The objective of this work was to investigate two procedures
in the acquisition of behavioral chains under two different
situations. In the backward procedure (T), training was initiated by
the last response in the chain, while in the forward procedure (F) it
started by the firtst response in the chain. In the first experiment,
college students were exposed to both acquisition procedures.
This was an attempt to evaluate he efficiency of the procedures,
when discriminative stimuli linking each response in the chain were more similiar or less. In the second experiment, effects of the two
procedures were verified when response topography differed.
Forward procedure is probably more effective because of two factors:
a) reinforcement is delivered during the learning process
directly for each response; b) the type of learning involved in this
procedure occurs earlier in the subject's behavioral repertoire.
