MATERNAL ATTITUDES OF WORKING MOTHERS AND CHOICE OF ALTERNATIVE CHILD-CARE ARRANGEMENTS
Abstract
Investigations on the effects of day-care centers on thedevelopment of children suggest that behaviors displayed by childrenwho attend day-care centers may be related to family variables whichhave themselves influenced the choice of kind of child-carearrangements. The present study compares the attitudes of 30 workingmothers whose children are taken care of at home by a live-incaregiver with the attitudes of 30 working mothers whose childrenattend day-care centers. Results show that the two groups of mothers donot differ in the attitudes towards child autonomy but mothers whosechildren are taken care for at home reveal significantly more positiveattitudes towards motherhood than mothers whose children attendday-care centers.
