DRUG CONSUMPTION:
NEW DEVELOPMENTS AND ANSWERS
Abstract
The increase in drug consumption in western society is
studied according to its cultural incidence. A significant change can be
detected between the hippies contestatory movement of the sixties and
today's apathy of young drug users. It is important to distinguish
between drug use and drug abuse, and to include, i,n our concerns,
alcohol, tobacco and medical drugs. Government measures changed
from repression by intimidation to prevention by general education.
Therapeutic techniques today vary from the coercitive, based on
behavioral techniques, to the liberal that value and encourage the
individual's capacity to assume responsability for his own life. Finally,
the creation, by the University of Brasilia, of a Center to provide
orientation about drugs and to care for drug addicts is discussed.
