Abstract

This paper, based on the work of Lacan, attempts to describe the psychoanalytical concept of body image, distinguishing it from the phenomenological and physiological approaches. The study of the elaboration of the unified body image during childhood as well as the study of the divided body and "lost body" in psychosis are considered the classical ways to approach body image. However, deeper research on the repercussions of some types of mutilating surgery, for instance mastectomy, may contribute to a better knowledge of how one experiences his own body and of the resulting body image.
