REGIONAL STEREOTYPES OF COLLEGE STUDENTS
Abstract
McCauley and Stitt's diagnostic ratio was used to study
stereotypes in undergraduates (N = 547) of Brasilia. Subjects compared
people from five regional groups, (Rio, São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Rio
Grande do Sul and the Northeast), with the Brazilian population in
general, using a list of fifteen adjectives. Anova & Tukey tests were
employed to compare subjects by sex, place of birth, and years of
residence in Brasilia; a qualitative analysis was done, based on the medians
and their deviations from the values attributed to Brazilians in
general. Results show a tendency to perceive the five regional groups
according to current stereotypes, and, for subjects born in these regions,
to accept, in their own evaluations, the perceptions of others.
