About the Journal
Aim and Scope
Pós - Revista Brasiliense de Pós-Graduação em Ciências Sociais is an open-access electronic journal, published twice a year, between June and July, and again between November and December. It was founded in 1997 and in 2011 began to be published digitally. It is managed by graduate students from the departments within the Institute of Social Sciences at the University of Brasília (ICS/UnB), namely, the Department of Anthropology (DAN), the Department of Sociology (SOL), and the Department of Latin American Studies (ELA).
Revista Pós publishes a variety of scholarly works, including articles, reviews, interviews, conferences, bibliographical essays, ethnographic essays, photographic essays, audiovisual productions, and thematic dossiers that demonstrate both relevance and originality within the realm of Social Sciences or related fields, offering empirical, methodological, or theoretical contributions to this expansive area of inquiry. The editorial focus of Revista Pós lies within Anthropology, Sociology, and Latin American Studies, aiming to contributing to, disseminate, cultivate, promote, and foster dialogues among researchers at various stages of their academic journey, enriching debates, and expanding perspectives within both the Brazilian and global academic communities.
Mission and Editorial Policy
We publish manuscripts that contribute to the debates in the Social Sciences field, completely free of charge, without any fees for publication or access to the journal's issues. All the content of the magazine, unless otherwise indicated in specific materials, is licensed under the Creative Commons International 4.0 non-commercial attribution (CC BY NC 4.0) since October 2023.
Revista Pós aims to cultivate postgraduate editors from the departments and Graduate Programs within the ICS/UnB, as well as to guide authors and readers through their journey of following and creating scientific publications. In pursuit of this mission, we prioritize fostering innovation and creativity in the scientific community, both within the university settings, among professors and graduate students of the Institute of Social Sciences, and beyond, through its openness to other academic spaces in Brazil and internationally.
Revista Pós is committed to implementing best practices in editorial processes, indexing, and effective promotion of its issues, following international standards of good editorial practices in scholarly publishing.
Affirmative Action Policy
In accordance with the Affirmative Action Policy established by the Graduate Programs at the University of Brasília (UnB), Revista Pós adheres to the principles outlined in CEPE Resolution 44/2020 for selecting Managing Editors. Accordingly, we allocate at least twenty percent (20%) of the Editorial Team positions to Black candidates, at least one additional position to Indigenous candidates, and at least one additional position to Quilombola candidates.
Aiming to contribute to decolonial practices in scientific production and dissemination, we produce the Virgínia Bicudo journal in collaboration with the Zora Houston collective of Black students from the Graduate Program in Social Anthropology at the University of Brasília (PPGAS/UnB). Published biannually, the journal is the result of a series of measures aimed at inclusion and recognition of Black Brazilian intellectuals. We encourage submissions of artistic and technological contributions with the goal of expanding the range of relevant productions in sociological and anthropological thought beyond traditionally accepted formats. For the Virgínia Bicudo journal, in addition to articles, reviews, interviews, and conference papers, we welcome works categorized as 'escrevivências' and experience reports, letters, podcast reviews, visual pieces, among others. The editorial guidelines and the statute of the Virgínia Bicudo journal can be accessed at https://periodicos.unb.br/index.php/revistapos/caderno .
To promote the participation of black researchers and intellectuals, the Revista Pós has established an Affirmative Action initiative through a registry of self-identified Black reviewers. This ensures their inclusion as reviewers in our editorial practices and processes. The registry is updated through voluntary registration of potential reviewers who self-identify as Black (both 'pretos' and 'pardos,' as defined by the Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics). Interested individuals can register by contacting the journal.
Editorial Evaluation Process
It is the policy of Revista Pós to evaluate manuscripts submitted to it on a double anonymity system. All submissions received go through a preliminary analysis by the Editorial Team and then by anonymous reviewers according to the type of submission.
Articles, bibliographic essays and photo-ethnographic essays are evaluated by the Managing Editors and then by at least two anonymous reviewers. Depending on the classification of the piece by the reviewers, it will be submitted for a third review, if deemed necessary.
The interviews are evaluated by a qualified external reviewer, appointed ad hoc, to ensure the importance and quality of the submission. Submissions are evaluated using fields available in the Open Journal System, where authors and reviewers must register previously.
Book and conference reviews will be evaluated internally by the Managing Editors.
Managing Editors are assigned to monitor the submission of each manuscript. They will be responsible for deciding whether to accept or reject the manuscripts, in accordance with the reviews, this decision may be submitted to the entire Editorial Team.
1- Evaluation by members of the Editorial Team
Submissions are initially reviewed by two of the journal's Managing Editors, who are responsible for monitoring the entire process of evaluating and publishing the manuscript. This first step will consist of evaluating the manuscript in relation to the Conditions for Submission, submitting the manuscript to the Copyspider anti-plagiarism software and then checking that it complies with the Guidelines for Authors. In the case of non-conformity, the manuscript will be returned for correction and resubmission. Manuscripts that do not meet the requirements of quality, originality, focus and scope of the journal and the anti-plagiarism policy will be rejected by the journal's Managing Editors.
2- External evaluation
When the previous requirements have been met, the Managing Editors in charge forward the manuscript for peer review, on a double anonymity system. The initial search for peers follows an order of priorities that begins with a search in the Bank of Self-Declared Black Reviewers, maintained by Revista Pós. If there are no specialists in the subject of the article in this database, we will then search for other reviewers, with the aim of broadening and decentralizing the search by the diversity of regions of origin/action of the reviewers, in order to guarantee a greater diversity of socio-anthropological perspectives and multiply the academic debates between various poles of the Social Sciences in Brazil and elsewhere.
The reviewers will have between twenty and thirty days to submit an evaluation of the manuscript, using the form available on the OJS (Open Journal System) platform. The Editorial Team recommends that the reviewers make a constructive judgment, pointing out the strengths and weaknesses of the manuscript and suggestions for further improvements, with a view to developing the work of the journal's target audience. Based on the feedback received, the papers will be classified as follows:
In the case of opinions recommending minor revisions, the Managing Editors responsible will forward recommendations for improving the manuscript, taking the feedback received and their own recommendations as parameters.
In the case of an undefined result, the author must reformulate the manuscript based on the suggestions made by the reviewers and any textual recommendations made by the editors responsible. If the author disagrees with the suggestions, he/she must justify not accepting them. In line with the statutes of Revista Pós, and in order to support and encourage the publications of our target audience, as well as their learning in relation to the publication of academic texts, we foresee, in this classification, that the manuscript will be submitted for evaluation again, preferably by the same reviewers, and will again be subject to the same classifications as above.
If the classification indicates the need for a third reviewer, the piece will be accepted for publication if this third reviewer rates it as “accept” or “publish with minor revisions”.
3- Evaluation by the assigned Managing Editors
In case of a recommendation to revise the manuscript, the assigned Managing Editors will evaluate the reformulation carried out by the author, taking into account their recommendations, the reviews and the manuscript originally submitted. The ability to handle the observations and recommendations of the Editors and referees will be taken into account. The final decision on publication will be taken by the assigned Managing Editors, and may be submitted to the entire Editorial Team for examination.
