Algorithms and public security

This text addresses the new standards adopted by public security, especially with regard to the use of new data processing technologies (machine learning and algorithms). Thus, the article aims to understand the expansion in the use of data in policing, in order to address the application strategies, the context in which public security is placed today and the problems concerning Big Data technologies and the origin of the data to be used, in the context of the police–criminal system. Technological advances may not necessarily mean an increase in the quality of police work. On the contrary, we may face an update of preventive / repressive instruments, based on the exploitation of intimacies through the massive use of personal data.
