Abstract

Purpose ”“ This article gives an overview of the regulation of pesticides in Brazil, by way of identifying the historical moment in which it happened. It addresses the theory of market and government failures in view of selected cases.

Methodology/approach/design ”“ It analyzes Brazil’s legal and regulatory framework to identify cases of market and government failures.

Findings ”“ State regulation is less costly than deregulation of the sector, although it may generate failures.

Practical implications ”“ It shows the importance of high quality regulatory standards and complementarity of efforts by the bodies entitled with registration of pesticides.
