Abstract

In Works of Love, Kierkegaard offers remarkable sequences
of considerations about love in Christianity. They are a powerful basis
for proposing the understanding of Christian ethics – Kierkegaard’s
“second ethics”. Kierkegaard assumes that Christian love essentially
cannot be defined or described. At the same time, it is evident that love
is presented in Christianity as a singular commandment and duty and
that the essence of Christian love can be modestly glimpsed from the
descriptions that can be done of some of its works – being all of them
determinations of love, which Kierkegaard details to his reader. Having
in view the profound connection that 20th-21st century Christian
theology made, with regard to ethics, between true faith (and lato sensu
true love) and the commitment to actions of justice or the fight for (both
social and political) justice, we can put the question about how does
such a dense analysis of love, as the one made by Kierkegaard, relate
to the idea of justice. Whatever the correct answer is supposed to be, it
brings with itself two benefits: understanding the core of the ethics of
love and of Christian religion as a religion of love and offering a critical
eye – a starting-point for a debate – at the thesis that Christian ethics
should be essentially comprehended from the concept of justice.
