The main purpose of this paper is to offer a brief overview of the idea of “pantheism”, looking for the general understanding of the concept, as well as its understanding and application in modern philosophy. This will be done both through the etymological analysis of the term and the demonstration of some of its occurrences at different moments in the history of philosophy. In spite of these occurrences it is a concept that, representing an alternative to the classic theism, is used primarily in the context of modern philosophy and theology. The analysis of modern pantheism will proceed through its association with Spinoza who has been regarded as the foremost representative of the theory. Subsequently it will discuss the Pantheism Controversy (Pantheismusstreit) that became public in 1785, showing the motivations as well as the consequences of this famous debate, highlighting the resumption of the pantheism, put into effect by Schelling in his 1809 Investigations.
