Abstract

This study analyses the use of language in interactions among patients who suffer endometriosis, a chronic gynecological condition. Our focus lies on how affect is constructed in two types of interaction: on the one hand, Facebook pages, and, specifically, comments by patients who suffer the pathology. The second type of interaction is interviews, which constitutes corpus B. The analysis followed the notion of evaluative configurations based on an adaptation of the system of Appraisal (Martin 2000; Martin y White 2005). Results indicate that the most frequent domain is un/happiness in both corpora, with a clear predominance of sadness. However, the configuration of un/happiness varies between the corpora. The differences may result from the functionality of each form of interaction, including a search for constructing a sense of community and member alignment through emotional support, or the construction of a personal experience.
