Abstract

In the current debate regarding the question of “what is a logic” is extremely common for one to search for the most abstract point of view possible in the hope that from such view one can finally characterize that subject that we call “logic”. In this sense, the study of logic is becoming one where the trend is a greater search for generality, universality and a general theory of logics. From such a perspective, the study of specific systems of logic may seem more and more as a secondary task, or even as a waste of time and energy. In this small exposure I intend to suggest a counterpoint to this idea, in other words, I intend to show in what ways it’s still useful for a philosopher to study systems of logic. In order to that, my strategy shall be the following. I’ll expose some systems of logic, I’ll talk a little about their history, the motivation for their creation, and so forth. Then I’ll examine some of their theorems and through that I’ll try to show how they can be philosophically relevant. This exposition will, by its turn, lead me to a pluralist position regarding the question of the correctness of logics and, as such, I’ll try at the end of this paper to argue in favor of such a position.
