The “Vocabulario da Lingua Brazil” by Anselm Eckart (around 1757-1759)

Based on dictionaries of the General Amazonian Language known to date (17th and 18th centuries) and accessible in published or digital form, some details of the anonymous dictionary entitled “Vocabulario da Língua. Brazil” are studied, whose author, the German Jesuit missionary Anselm Eckart, has identified himself with considerable certainty. After reporting on the metalexicographic data of this dictionary, the structure of the entries, the additions in the body of the entries and those found in the margins of the pages; the linguistic examples, the information on traditional linguistic use and contemporary common use and the grammatical information are analyzed. The problems of the comparative study of Eckart's dictionary with the corresponding ones, those chronologically earlier and those contemporary, are discussed, as well as the possibilities of reconstructing their interdependencies and the chronology of their creation before and after the imprisonment of the Jesuits in 1759.
