Abstract

This article covers the theoretical and historical bases of Critical Linguistics – a theory focused on the correlations between linguistic and social structures. This study is set within the scope of Critical Discourse Studies, the area of Linguistics which investigates is-sues of power, ideology, hegemony, and domination present in language. This article pro-proses revisit Critical Linguistics theoretical basis, its founding concepts, and methods of dis-course analysis. For that purpose, it resorts to founding papers of the theory, especially Language and Control (1979) and Language as Ideology (1979), in order to clarify the positions assumed by its proponents and relate them to the categories that composed the thought of a critical linguistics.
