In this paper we discuss how a group of six Brazilian semioticians narratively positioned themselves vis-à-vis the construction of their academic identity. Their identity positionings were analysed in in-depth interviews by using a synergy of different strands of narrative positioning theory (Bamberg & Georgakopoulou, 2008; De Fina, 2013; Deppermann, 2015, Hyvärinen, Hatavara & Rautajoki, 2021). This synergy has been carried out to get to know how interviewees construct their identity in the field of semiotics. The results show positionings related to macro discursive contexts such as: 1) the current sociopolitical context of Brazil and, 2) a prevailing discourse among semioticians from different countries that conveys their experience of working in a marginal field. This macro discourse is also called the Discourse of semiotics (Chávez Herrera, 2022a).
