Heart of Darkness: Necropolitics and translation as alternative tools of analysis

Abstract

This article analyses the transposition from literature to film of Joseph Conrad´s” Heart of Darkness” using as a tool Achille Mbembe´s notion of necropolitics, contrasting it with the the Post-Colonial theory. Hence, a critical reading of the theory´s main topics is initially made, followed by an analysis of the literary work, taking into accout notions of necropolitics. It is also understood that the process used for such transposition is that of intersemiotic translation and, thus, to provide theoretical support for the analysis made here, the reading was focused on this term based on Roman Jakobson and Julio Plaza´s understandings.

Laura Silva de Souza, Universidade Federal de Pelotas

Possui graduação em Comunicação Social - Habilitação Jornalismo pela Universidade Católica de Pelotas (2003) e graduação em Letras - Português e Inglês e Respectivas Literaturas pela Universidade Federal de Pelotas (2016). Atuou como jornalista na Prefeitura Municipal de Santa Vitória do Palmar ( 2017-2019) e como tutor à distância - IFSUL Campus Pelotas (2014-2015). Mestre em Letras- Literatura Comparada (2018) pela Universidade Federal de Pelotas, atualmente é doutoranda no programa de Pós-graduação em Letras - Linguagem, Texto e Imagem da Universidade Federal de Pelotas.
