“Queer” literature in Portuguese: a comparative reading of Pardalita and Arlindo
Keywords:
multimodality; multimodal novel; hybrid novel; homosexualityAbstract
This study aims to conduct a comparative reading of two novels, one Portuguese and one Brazilian, primarily intended for young adults, that address issues related to the discovery and affirmation of homosexual orientation. The selected volumes are Pardalita by Joana Estrela and Arlindo by Ilustralu, the pseudonym of Luiza de Souza, published in their respective countries in 2021 and 2022. They share a multimodal dimension, particularly through the frequent presence of images as an integral part of the narratives, alongside the text. The books under analysis not only exemplify innovative literary trends through their themes - clearly disruptive and groundbreaking - but also through their formats, which merge different languages, styles, and even literary genres. Created by young illustrators and authors of the same generation, who have already been recognized with various awards, these books seem to illustrate the emerging thematic and formal trends in the publishing landscape of their respective countries, highlighting perspectives and realities that are often silenced and overlooked.
