The Analytical Challenge of Brazilian-Style Citizenship: Notes Toward an Increasingly Necessary Field of Study

Abstract

The recently published book by Luís Roberto Cardoso de Oliveira presents an arc of theoretical development on the theme of citizenship and rights in Brazil, grounded in 15 years of research and debates across diverse academic networks, attesting to the importance of exchanges and ethnographies for theoretical production in Anthropology.

In thinking about how to organize my contribution to the debate, I decided to make two moves. First, I want to revisit here some points from this long trajectory, with a view to outlining a lineage that, among others, situates this book within the field of the anthropology of law in Brazil.

Next, I want to describe—almost in the form of a vulgate—the analytical framework the author proposes. In doing so, I raise, by way of provocation (in the best sense), some reflections aimed at expanding the theoretical dialogue on the theme and on the effects of this framework for interpreting the ethnographic realities that lie ahead of us.
