Em 1985, Marcel Gauchet publicou um livro seminal intitulado Le Désenchantement du Monde, o qual se tomou (juntamente com textos complementares ”” ver Gauchet 1984) centro de um debate envolvendo, sobretudo, filósofos e teólogos (Mongin 1985; Schlegel 1985 e 1986; Valadier 1984; Steil, a sair) ‘. A tese central, tal como a apresenta sem meias palavras logo na primeira página, não é propriamente nova: "a trajetória viva do religioso no seio de nosso mundo está no essencial acabada".
