Abstract

The main goal of this article is to identify and analyze in Charlotte Brontë’s 1847 novel Jane Eyre the symbolism of the charade, as well as its associations throughout the novel. For that, the scenes in which the charade element is present and their possible meanings were described, taking into account the historical context of the Victorian era. The principles of Close Reading were also adopted as a theoretical line of thought. It was possible to conclude that the charade assumes two meanings in the novel: the guessing game and the creation of an illusory image. Both are relevant and help the reader to unravel the mysteries of the novel itself, which also constitute a charade in its entirety.
