Abstract

The article endorses a view of gender as structure. As such, gender hierarchy belongs to the dominion of the symbolic and lies somewhere beneath the observable reality that provides materials for the work of the ethnographer. Gender structures reality, imprinting in it the organization of an originary scene usually transposed into the terms of family relationships. Within this perspective, the author can only envisage one outlet from the hierarchical circle of power and subjected desire: to disclose the usual — though generally masked — circular dynamics of androgyny that is an ordinary part of the experience of social sujects.
