Abstract

Every society produces a cultural system (a value structure, habits and social practices), a symbolic system (myths and unifying rites), and an imaginary system , which assures the functioning of the two former systems and acts as a locus of construction of the individual's social identity. The article develops the freudian argument of the "pathology of civilized societies" and amplifies the scope of psycho-analytical categories to the explanation of collective phenomenona. It also discusses the consequences of the ideology of the unitary identity: fanaticism, xenophobia and racism.
