Abstract

This article describes and discusses the problems raised by the need for funding the kinds of art that cannot pay for themselves — serious music and art-museums —, in the context of late twentieth century in the United States. The author conludes that, although the shift from virtually complete state support has not occurred in the countries that are trying to adopt it, the privatization process sets the parameters for change in the form and substance of the arts, as well as in their public.
