Little is known about the influence of mortar coatings on the penetration of chloride ions in concrete structures. In reinforced concrete structures, located in coastal regions, where there is frequent variation of saturation degree and high incidence of aggressive agents, these coatings can bring a complementary protection to the concrete. This work demonstrates the development of a methodology for studies related to the penetration of chloride ions in concretes coated with mortars in situations of variation of saturation degree. The methodology is based on experiments carried out on concrete test bodies coated with mortar, subjected to drying, immersion and stabilization tests to verify changes in the saturation degree between the different materials that constitute them, besides the evaluation of the viability of the execution of the material extraction process for chemical analysis. The results show that the use of concrete with mortar and mortar coating presents a good response to the extraction process, and present a satisfactory form to the diffusion study, provided that, especially, factors such as the disposition of the specimens in the stabilization, sealing and removal of air so that there is no loss of moisture and the making of adequate number of test specimens for calculation of absorption.
