The neoplasia is a pathology originated by uncontrolled divisions of the cells, that by some mechanism, undergo genetic alterations becoming neoplastic or carcinogenic. These cells have great power to invade other tissues through the blood or lymphatic circulation. Radiation therapy uses ionizing radiation to inhibit cell divisions leading to death. Using radiotherapy to treat cancer, the body has adverse effects, and mucositis is one of the most prevalent reactions in patients. The use of laser therapy appears as one of the best response alternatives in the healing of inflammation of the oral mucosa. The objective of the study was to perform a narrative review of the literature of the most recent published articles, from 2000 to 2017, that prove the effective use of this application of laser therapy. This literature review showed that the use of laser therapy to minimize the mucositis of treated patients improved mastication, swallowing and even speech. The data also demonstrated that in treating the mucositis avoids the patient avoidance of the radiotherapeutic treatment. This fact makes possible an expressive increase in the chance of cure of the patients in relation to the neoplasia.
