The pandemic of the new coronavirus (COVID-19) quickly impacted health systems and the world economy, becoming the greatest health crisis of the modern age. It started with an outbreak in Wuham, China and has assumed unimaginable proportions, generating political and academic discussions in the form of coping, in addition to the panic generated by the population due to the severity of its effects. The present study is a theoretical article carried out through a non-systematic literature review, which seeks to point out the main characteristics of the virus and its reflexes, mainly in Brazil. As in other countries, the Brazilian health system is strongly affected, requiring an intense mobilization of governmental administrations in all spheres. In this sense, the need to strengthen and adequately finance the Unified Health System to combat health crises is emphasized, given the progressive scrapping that it has been suffering in recent years. Equally important, it is the contextualization of interventions by managers, where scientific knowledge presents itself as a strong ally in facing the pandemic, strengthening the SUS, and guidance for Brazilian public management.
