Abstract

The present article is about the only panorama of Rio de Janeiro displayed in a British roundabout in the first half of the nineteenth century. It was exhibited between the years of 1827 and 1828, in the property of Robert Burford in Leicester Square. All information we have about it is provided by the brochure named Description of the panorama view of the city of St. Sebastian, and the Bay of Rio Janeiro (...), since the original monumental
does not exist anymore. This article analyses both the text and the engraving presented in the brochure, and points out some relationships that are essential for its understanding.
