A bordo do navio: um argumento condicional contra a indiferença religiosa

Abstract

The hypothesis to be established in the present work is that religious indifference (conceived as the absence of a search for truth in questions concerning religion) implies ethical inconsistencies; possibly, therefore, at least in some specific circumstances to be described, becoming subject to reprobation. For the sake of this intent three questions of significant relevance for what constitutes religious matter are presented. They are: the existence or inexistence of God and his specific properties; the salvation offered to humanity upon specifically religious practice and, finally, the supposed truth of a single religious doctrine to the detriment of others. Then, it is investigated in which circumstances indifference itself is an ethically reprehensible attitude. Lastly, it is argued that, once these circumstances are accepted, it is necessary to conclude that the hypothesis is valid, since indifference towards the three enunciated questions fits the conditions of ethically reprehensibility previously established.
