A fortuna como “religião” na filosofia de Maquiavel

Fortune is one of the most important concepts in Machiavellian philosophy. Although knowledge about this Roman goddess, fortune, predates Machiavelli's work, we can understand how the Florentine author's theory becomes responsible for its excessive exposition. Therefore, this subject has been duly analyzed for more than five hundred years, that is, since the publication of Machiavelli's main works, forming different appreciations. Notably, we do not intend to eliminate the variable possibilities regarding the composition of fortune, but rather to offer another key to reading that consists of understanding fortune as a model of “religion” in which the belief in something considered cosmological reveals itself, in our understanding, as a metaphor, among other meanings, to highlight the absence – and the limits – of political action. This article adopts a theoretical-descriptive methodology, prioritizing an internal, textualist investigation in which we have as a foundation the following writings by Machiavelli: The Prince and Di Fortuna.
