Our proposal in this article is to show how the capable man is understood as the recipient of religion. Furthermore, we will elucidate how the theme of hope emerges from this context. The capable human being is the guiding thread of the philosophical anthropology developed by Paul Ricoeur. The French philosopher understands that the capable man is the recipient of religion. For Ricoeur, one of the objectives of religion is to reorient the human being towards love and justice. In this sense, even though human beings are marked by fallibility, they are directed towards good. It is within this horizon that the dimension of hope flourishes in Ricoeur's thought. Hope represents the logic of the superabundance of meaning in opposition to the abundance of non-meaning, failure, and destruction. This logic expresses that the Christian kerygma proclaims meaning for human existence in contrast to nothingness and meaninglessness. One of the objectives of religion is to proclaim hope. This hope represents the superabundance of meaning in opposition to the abundance of non-meaning, failure, and destruction.
