Abstract

The philosophy of religion of Epicurus of Samos seeks to solve three problems about the existence of gods and about public religion: the origin of the belief in the existence of the gods, their intervention in the world, and the function of religious worship. In contrast to Reformed Epistemology that discusses the rationality of religious beliefs, Epicurus holds that belief in divinity originates from a natural prolepsis that suggests that the gods are happy and immortal. Epicurus' theses bring as a consequence the redefinition of the function of religion, since the gods do not cause harm or benefits to men, nor interfere in the world.
