Abstract
The article deals with the concept of religion devoid of essence in Bernhard Welte’s thought and its connection with the Kierkegaardian notions of faith, scandal, and indirect communication. It first describes the essence of religion as an existential faith in Mystery. Secondly, it shows how an absolute condition is given to the sphere of mediation as the milieu in which the loss of the essence of religion occurs. It then analyzes the indirect mode of manifestation of Mystery as the ultimate ground for the possibility of this lack of essence. Finally, the article proposes a series of corrective criteria to avoid giving the sphere of mediation an absolute character.
