Abstract

The work that is translated in this article was possibly
written by Matthew of Ephesus, literary pseudonym
of Manuel Gabalas. Itdepicts a brief exegesis on the
travels of Odysseus described in the Homeric epics.
Using the Greek language, the Byzantine author
clarifies the enigmas perpetrated by a pagan
mythological tradition, adapting them to Judaeo-
Christian values and behaviors and considering
Odysseus a model of moral ideals and a paradigmatic
character. The adventures of the hero represent the
dangers and temptations facing the humanity, as well
as the best form to avoid, repress and overcome them.
