Survey of the refereeing process adopted by a group of Brazilian scientific journals financed by two Government agencies, CNPq and Finep, in 1995 and 1996. Main points sought were: how do editors obtain and select manuscripts, and how do they view the refereeing process. Data was gathered through a questionnaire sent to the editors of the 116 titles then financed by those two agencies, of which 86 (74,6%) returned. Results show that all editors stress the importance of maintaining a system of pair review, but the differences and similarities found among their opinions are not apparently due to the subject area of the periodicals they edit but to something else, not detected.
