Active citizenship requires, for its exercise, the development of dialogic capability and of intersubjectivity, in order to surpass the limits of the classic model of participatory democracy and to promote effective articulation between political power and citizenship power in the distinct spheres of social life. A citizen is someone that is his own owner, among his fellow men, in the heart of the political community, and that composes common life with them. The analysis of the four dimensions in which bioethics acts as an impulse to active citizenship reveals that reciprocal recognition is what constitutes us as persons and what grants us not a price, but dignity.
