Abstract

This article is the result of a scientific initiation project developed at the University of Brasilia under the guidance of Professor Vanessa Carvalho de Andrade of the Physics Institute from 2020 to 2021. It is a conceptual-historical study in particle physics with a focus on the chronology of discovery and proposals of elementary particles capable of explaining the high energy experiments of the time. It is an introduction to the subject, without delving into the mathematics. Throughout this timeline, new theories and concepts related to the intrinsic properties of these particles are presented; in general, this takes shape as the Standard Model of Particle Physics. Moreover, this text has didactic potential to present the theme.
