The creation and development of Gleba Celeste, in north-central Mato Grosso, is a symbol of the recent occupation of the southern edge of the Amazon. The growth of the city of Sinop and, to a lesser extent, of the satellite municipalities of Vera, Cláudia and Santa Carmem, testify to the vitality of the expansion of the pioneer front in this region. Landsat satellite images make it possible to visualize and outline the phases of this expansion, which lead to the structuring of a new space supported by growing deforestation and a clear hierarchy of urban centers.Downloads
