Abstract

The following is a translation of part of the introduction to Martin Knust’s Sprachvertonung und Gestik in den Werken Richard Wagners. The book presents an in-depth study of the relationship between vocal action and gesture in Richard Wagner. It shows how Wagner drew on the theatrical traditions of his time to realize his proposals for a new musical drama.
